A mobile court sitting in Benin, the Edo State capital, on Wednesday sentenced nine motorists to two years imprisonment for violating various traffic offences within the state.
Their arrest and arraignment followed the commencement of a five-day special operation tagged, Operation Show Your Vehicle Documents, by the Edo State Police Command.
The prosecutor, Aigbedion Obakpalor, told the court that the convicts were charged for being in possession of expired or fake driver’s licences, broken rear light, driving with a private license for commercial use.
Obakpolor listed other offences to include operating without the state taxi colour code and insurance certificates.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Section 7 of the Road Traffic Law Cap 148 of the Bendel State of Nigeria,1976, now applicable to Edo, and punishable under Section 42 of the law.
The presiding magistrate, Mr. Frank Idiake, who handed down the sentence after taking their pleas, however, provided the convicts with an option of fine ranging from N20,000 to N60,000.
