Court convicts nine drivers for traffic offences in Edo

A mobile court sitting in Benin, the Edo State capital, on Wednesday sentenced ‎nine motorists to two years imprisonment for violating various traffic offences within the state.‎

Their arrest and arraignment followed the commencement of a five-day special operation tagged, Operation Show Your Vehicle Documents, by the Edo State Police Command.

The prosecutor, Aigbedion Obakpalor, told the court that the ‎convicts were charged for being in possession of expired or fake ‎driver’s licences, broken rear light, driving ‎with a private license for commercial use.‎

Obakpolor listed other offences to include operating without the state taxi ‎colour code and insurance certificates.‎

‎The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Section 7 of the Road ‎Traffic Law Cap 148 of the Bendel State of Nigeria,1976, now applicable ‎to Edo, and punishable under Section 42 of the law.‎

‎The presiding magistrate, Mr. Frank Idiake, who handed down the sentence after taking their pleas, however, provided the convicts with an option of fine ranging from N20,000 to N60,000.
