Motorists desert Edo roads

Motorists have deserted major roads in Edo State for fear of being arrested by police operatives for fake driving licence and other vehicle particulars.

This followed the commencement of a special operation by the security agency.

The Edo State Police Command had on Tuesday launched “Operation Show Your Vehicle Documents” as part of efforts by the security agency, other sister agencies and the state internal revenue service to rid roads of vehicles with forged documents as well as tinted glass and covered number plates without permit.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike, had said in a statement that the exercise was part of efforts to curb the rate of crime in the state. This took place one week after nine motorists were convicted by a mobile court for various traffic offences.

Ezike had explained that the five-day operation would include physical inspection of vehicles to check their road worthiness, along with their respective certificates.

The measures would also include the clearing of all obstructions that impede the free flow of traffic in Benin metropolis.

According to a statement signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Department of Finance and Administration, Mr. Abdulkadir Mohammed, arrangements have also been concluded for mobile courts to simultaneously sit throughout the period of the exercise in order to ensure quick dispensation of justice. These would also include the promotion of citizens’ rights and preservation of the rule of law.
