A suspected cable thief was yesterday electrocuted in Eket, south west Akwa Ibom.
The man simply identified in the area as Adaddy was said to have met
his untimely death inside Grace Bill 500kv substation, under Qua River
11kv feeder.
According to an eyewitness the vandal, met his waterloo while
attempting to cut a 300mm single core armored cable, which exploded
resulting in his electrocution.
Confirming the incident, manager, corporate communications of Port
Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHED, Mr. Jonah Iboma said
that the activities of vandals within PHED network, Iboma has plunged
the company’s esteemed customers into unwarranted darkness, noting that
PHED had lost millions of naira arising from these shameful acts.
Iboma explained that the wanton destruction of PHED installations by
the vandals accounted for the loss of over 150 transformers with other
accessories in the system.
He however enjoined community leaders and members of public to report
anybody with suspicious movements around PHED installations especially
at unholy hours to security agencies.
“You have to help us fight these vandals by stopping and reporting
any suspicious movement around PHED transformers to law enforcement
agents because if you ignore such report, you may be in darkness,” Iboma
said.
Meanwhile,police in Eket have removed the corpse of the suspected
vandal and deposited it at Emmanuel General Hospital located in the
area.
