Iranian Paralympics Cyclist Dies After Crash In Rio Road Race

Cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad was the first athlete to die at a Paralympics games it has been confirmed.

The athlete died following a crash in the men's C4/C5 road race at the Rio Paralympics , it was confirmed on Saturday.

During a press conference, IPC president Sir Philip Craven: "I've just had it confirmed by Craig Spence (director of communications) that this is the first athlete death at a Paralympic Games.

"We will look into the report of this incident and decide what we need to do to prevent this from happening in the future."

Golbarnezhad, from Shiraz, was treated at the scene of the accident before being taken to a local hospital.

Iran's NPC later announced he had died. He was 48.

Rio Paralympics: Ndidi Nwosu Wins Nigeria's 5th Gold

Nigeria’s Ndidi Nwosu won the country’s fifth gold in the women’s -73kg Powerlifting event at the ongoing Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil.

Nwosu lifted 140kg to equal the Paralympics Record (PR), which gave her the coveted gold at the event. France’s Souhad Ghazouani came second after she lifted 135kg, while Egypt’s Amany Ali came third.

The Nigerian was far behind the two counterparts quite early in the event, but she perfected her strategy to take the giant stride that produced the gold medal in the end.

Nwosu initially wanted to go for 127kg, but later requested for 140kg in her third attempt, as the Nigerian clearly took it ahead of the other two competitors. He finally triumphed when both opponents failed to match her; as she equaled Ghazouani’s PR. ‘

Mikel Finally Opens Up, I Spent £30,000 On Players At Rio

Super Eagles Captain and Chelsea Midfielder, John Mikel bi has revealed he paid money to save dream team at the Rio Olympics in a new interview with Goal.com. This comes after Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung debunked rumours of any payment by the player.

"I think if we talk about the money that I put into the team I think it was more than [£30,000]," Mikel told Goal. "But we just had to do it.

"I said to myself, 'I won’t let this happen. If I can help, I’ll try to help'. Sometimes there was no food, sometimes there was no pitch to train on, there was no bus to go to the training ground. So all of this was what me and the coach had to figure out, and get money together.

"I came to the camp. I sat down with the boys in Atlanta and I could see the frustration, the pain and the anger. Their aim was to play in the Olympics, their goal was to play in the Olympics. And for me being there and seeing what they are going through, they are young boys, they want to start their career and someone in the ministry is trying to crush that dream," he said.

Team Nigeria Captain to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, John Mikel Obi, has given insights on his maiden appearance in the sporting showpiece.

In an exclusive interview with his club, Chelsea FC’s official website, Team Nigeria Captain to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, John Mikel Obi, has given insights about the good, bad and the ugly sides of his Olympic experience in terms of not having the best of preparations, as well as the treatment of the Nigerian players by the nations government and football authories.

 

Below is the full interview we culled from ChelseaFC.com;

 

Mikel, welcome back. Tell us about the summer…

 

‘I hadn’t played in an Olympics before, I missed out in 2008 in Beijing and in 2012 we didn’t qualify for London, so I spoke to the club and got their permission to go. It was an amazing experience to play with the Under-23s and lead the team, being the captain of the nation leading it to Rio. I’m very, very proud.

 

‘As a footballer you probably only get one opportunity to play in the Olympics, it was a great experience and the Brazilian fans were amazing too. They supported us all the way and wanted us to do well, to make the final. It was one of the best tournaments I’ve had.’

As the squad’s foremost player and one of only two aged over 23, you must have been something of a father figure to your younger team-mates?

 

‘Yes, it was amazing. Leading the team not just in football but athletics, basketball, everything, was amazing for me. What an honour to be able to do that, and to represent my country is something I’m always proud of.

 

‘The boys were absolutely amazing and I hope to see them all playing at the top level soon.’

The team had problems in the build-up, to do with financing. What happened in your training camp in the US?

 

‘It wasn’t a great experience in the build-up in Atlanta. There was no food for the guys, no bus to go to training, no pitch to train on.

 

‘Coming into the team I tried to help as much as I can. The boys had suffered for two years, working very hard trying to play in Rio. I wanted to help as much as I could and they all say they owe me. It’s a great achievement that we managed to go there and win a medal.’

Your relationship with Samson Siasia, the coach, must have helped?

 

‘We have known each other for a long time. We know how to communicate with each other and it made for a good atmosphere with the rest of the team on the training pitch. We tried to calm the players, make them see the bigger picture and not let external things influence us.

That first game against Japan was a rollercoaster. What happened around that 5-4 win?

 

‘It was a crazy one! We just came off the plane two or three hours before the game, went to the hotel, put our bags down, ate and headed straight to the stadium. Not the typical match preparation. So it was a crazy game, lots of goals, and one we were very happy to win though. To go from there and win the second game helped us settle into the tournament.’

And you found the net with a tidy finish against Denmark in the quarter-final…

 

‘I always do when I play for the national team! I tend to push a bit further forward and express myself a little bit more, so there is more responsibility to create chances, and if I can get one or two goals here and there it’s great.’

Defeat to Germany and then the bronze medal match against Honduras. Where does it sit in comparison to your other career achievements?

 

‘It ranks up there. Obviously the Champions League is the Champions League and winning the African Nations and Premier League are massive, but this is up there with those trophies. I can’t express how proud and happy I am to have achieved this.

 

‘The reception at home was great. The Nigerian people were very happy, it was the only medal we won and they were very proud.’

No Zika Cases Reported During Rio Olympics- WHO

The World Health Organization has said there have been no confirmed cases of Zika among travellers or athletes at the Rio Olympics.

The WHO said its prediction that the Games would not fuel the spread of the Zika virus was being proved correct. Some health experts had criticised the organisation for not calling for the Games to be moved or postponed.

At a news conference in Geneva, the head of the WHO's health emergency programme Peter Salama, said: "We don't have any confirmed cases of Zika amongst travellers or amongst indeed athletes."
And he said of the Paralympics, due to start on 7 September: "We are optimistic that the same risk assessment will hold and there will be little additional risks."

My Contract With NFF Ended with the Rio Olympics , All I Need Now Is My Money - Siasia

The Nigeria Football Federation officials have stated that they are not expecting any letter of resignation from the national U23 coach, Samson Siasia, as his contract ended with the Rio Olympics. A member of the federation who spoke with The Punch on Sunday said the former Super Eagles striker was free to move on.

Siasia who also spoke with The Punch newspaper on Sunday corroborated the NFF statement of his contract having ended but demanded that his outstanding salary be paid him.

Siasia said, “This is not really resignation; my contract was arranged to end with the Olympics. And so the contract has ended.

“What is very important is that I get every kobo that I am owed. I need the money now than ever and I believe I have really endured and I have been cooperative.”

The coach who just won the Olympic bronze in Rio this month did not however completely deny the resignation story that made the headlines by the weekend.

“I spoke with a reporter but I guess the one who are referring to was extracted from the interview I granted somebody else. What I was asked was my entire story at the Olympics and this included Atlanta camping.

“Of course a lot of things happened that I can’t be really happy about especially the way the team was portrayed. But that is over as my contract has also actually ended. What is left now is my cash and that is very, very important,” he said.

Siasia and his friends are hoping that the FA should be able to sort out his bills quickly as they have been able to appoint a new coach from Germany for the Eagles.

Brazil hero Neymar has stepped down as captain of the national side after firing them to Olympic gold in remarkable fashion on Saturday night.

At their home Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil won the gold medal match against Germany after Neymar struck a 25-yard free-kick and then slotted home the winning penalty in a shoot-out.

Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel will according to team’s sources, donate part of his share of the $390,000 awarded to the bronze winning Nigeria U-23 team at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Katsuya Takasu, a Japanese surgeon made good his promise to reward  the team for their bravery in Rio after they beat Honduras 3-2 for the bronze medal.

The Nigeria Football Federation and the Sports Ministry made their observations known by insisting that the money must be from a credible source, but according to feelers from the camp of the Olympics Eagles, the NFF were only seeking for means of getting their hands on the money.

However, Takasu issued two Citibank cheques $200,000 in the name of coach Samson Siasia and $190,000 in the name of Mikel. One of the team’s officials disclosed to Africafootball.com that the team vowed not to hand over the money to the NFF.

“Mikel has insisted all of us will get our share of the money. That we should not mind what the people in the NFF are saying. “He will make available this cash when he comes for next month’s AFCON qualifier against Tanzania in Uyo.”

A team meeting has already resolved that both players and officials will receive equal amount of the cash with Mikel himself agreeing to give part of his own share for the chief coach (Siasia) to get more than the rest of the squad.

It was further gathered that the sharing formula agreed was a flat rate for the 22 players (18 accredited players and four alternate players) and 10 officials.

The South African runner who has been bashed with controversy of high testosterone levels claimed victory at the Olympics on Saturday as she won gold in the 800-meter.

Rio: Team Nigeria's Kits Arrive 3 Days To End Of Olympics

Three days to the end of the 2016 Rio Olympics, Team Nigeria took delivery of the much awaited kits after most of the athletes had concluded their events with some already back to their bases.

A top official of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria who disclosed this to Sports Vanguard yesterday, said the kits which arrived Wednesday night would no longer serve any purpose because “most of the athletes have left after concluding their events”.

Touching Moment U.S. Long Jumper Brings His Gold Medal Home To His Sick Mom (Photos)

Long jumper Jeff Henderson had one of the most emotional homecomings for any Olympic athlete after winning a gold medal and dedicating it to his mother.

Henderson, from McAlmont, Arkansas, gave his medal to his mother, Debra, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease 10 years ago, at his childhood home after landing to a hero's welcome at the local airport.

The 27-year-old track and field star delivered on a promise he made to her before he left for Rio de Janeiro, and was at a loss for words when he showed her his medal.

Footage broadcast by NBC affiliate KARK-TV showed the pair's emotional reunion.

'Hey, how you doing?' his mother asked him. Afterwards, Henderson had a hard time explaining how much the moment meant to him. 

'Hard to explain, hard to put that in words,' he said. 'Emotions were like, I don't know, hard to explain.'

Henderson has been open about his mom's battle with Alzheimer's and dedicated his gold medal to her after he became an Olympic champion last Saturday.

'The medal is just for her,' he told NBC. 'She got sick when I was 17, 18 years old. It was hard for me to do that, and leave her there. Everything I did was for her. It was for God, for her and my family.'
