I was Scared of Living in My Father's Shadow - Comic Rapper, Falz Opens Up

Popular Jenifa's Diary actor and rapper, Falz the Bahd Guy, has opened up that while growing up, he once harboured fears of dwelling in his lawyer father's shadow.

While speaking to contestants in the ongoing MTN Project Fame competition, multi-award winning Nigerian rapper and comic actor, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz the Bahd Guy, revealed that he once harboured fears of dwelling in his father’s shadow.

 

According TheCable Lifestyle who monitored the programme, the 26-year-old Jenifa’s Diary actor, who is the son of Nigerian human rights activist and senior advocate, Femi Falana, said; 

“The fear I had about coming into the limelight was that I would always be in my father’s shadow because he was out there already as a renowned activist and lawyer.

“Being an upcoming artist, headlines, newspapers, magazine and online publications tagged me as Femi Falana’s son and I would say

 

“Hello, is that my stage name?

“My fear was that how long is this going to last? How long will people continue to refer to me as his son. But after so much effort and hard work, I arrived at a place where they now refer to my dad as Falz’s dad,” the rapper said.

The lawyer-turned-rapper also revealed that he accidentally discovered that his faux Yoruba accent could be popular among fans.

 

“I think I will say that I stumbled on it because initially, it was always the music. In early 2014, I was away on holiday with the family and I decided to make a short clip. I just decided to be stupid and the views I got were ridiculous.

“I was surprised because I was just enjoying myself and from that point, I picked out what it was about me, what it was that made me stand out and it was because I tried to be original,” Falz said.

Popular rapper cum comedian, Falz, who got more fans than foes when he came into the entertainment industry with his unique funny accent, has revealed how he got his funny accent.

In a recent interview with Punch Newspaper, Nigerian rapper and comic actor, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz the Bahd Guy, has revealed what made him to have such funny accent from widely known pidgin english.

"Ever since I was in secondary school, I have had this fake accent. I started with making fun of people and my siblings but as soon as I got into the university, I began to focus on my music and I decided to apply the brand in my music. After university, the brand began to grow bigger so I decided to branch out and I began to do short and funny videos. Now it puts food on my table," he said.

 

The trained lawyer and son of Femi Falana, a Lagos human rights activist, Falz said that he had practised his law profession and even represented some clients in court before delving into music.

 

"I actively practised for about two years after I was called to the bar in 2012. I was always going to court. It was not easy keeping my alter ego in check but I had to. I had to restrain myself from not being funny. Those that surrounded me at the time knew as well that I was trying my best to be ‘sane’ because it would have been catastrophic if I had allowed my alter ego to take over. I had to control everything from within," he said.

 

Falz also revealed that he doesn’t see himself taking over his father’s popular law chambers. "I cannot take over my father’s law chambers because it is a law firm and not a family business. There are so many lawyers there that are capable of continuing the legacy; so it is not something that I necessarily have to do," he said.
