Seven friends drowned and another is feared dead after their boat capsized while they gathered at one end for a selfie.

The young men were filming for Facebook Live using a selfie stick and can be seen in the footage laughing and joking.

But moments later tragedy struck, as the men were so engrossed in playing up for the camera, that they didn't realise the were tipping over.

The men in their late teens and early twenties had been at the Mangrul Lake in Kuhi Taluka for a picnic when they fell in the water on Sunday evening.

Chandra Bhadure, the senior Inspector from Kalmeshwar police station in Nagpur said:

"The guys had got onto a small boat.

"They were so engrossed in taking selfies and doing the live-streaming in Facebook that they forgot
that all of them had come to one corner of the boat.

"That would capsize as a result of the imbalance caused by the uneven weight put on one side.

"India has become the capital of selfie death in the world, but our people still continue to risk their life and limb for a selfie,” he said.

The dead men were identified as Harshal Adamne, 18, his 20-year-old brother Chetan Adamne, Govardhan Thote 18, Rahul Walode, 23, Ram Shivarkar, 24, Maqsood Sheikh, 27 and Abdul Sayeed, 21, all from Ashirwad Nagar in Nagpur city.

Their friend Atul Bhoya is still missing.

14 Family Members Die In Boat Accident

Fourteen people, comprising women and children from one family, died after a boat capsized in a deep pond in Southern India, local police said on Saturday.

The accident occurred in a village in the Guntakal region of Andhra Pradesh state on Friday evening when the group was taking a joyride on a fishing boat.

Local police inspector Gurunath Babu said that the boat possibly capsized due to overcrowding, but the exact cause of the accident was still being investigated.

“The victims include six women, plus eight children all under the age of 15.

“Two men were able to swim to safety while one child was rescued by locals,” Babu said.

The people who had hired the boat belonged to an extended family that had come to attend a religious ceremony at a local temple.

Every year, scores of people drown in boat tragedies across India, which are mostly blamed on overcrowding, poor maintenance of vessels and lax safety rules.

In January, 25 people died when a boat sank in the Ganges river in the eastern state of Bihar.

Nine Killed In Indonesia Boat Accident

The wooden boat was carrying around 30 people when it overturned Friday afternoon after departing from Takalar Lama river to Tanah Keke island in the province of South Sulawesi.

Twenty-one people have been found alive but rescue teams are still searching for missing passengers.

"It´s a traditional boat and it didn´t report to the relevant authorities before it departed, so there´s also no passenger manifest and we don´t know exactly how many people were on board," said local disaster agency spokesman Hamsidar.

The cause of the accident is still not known, but officials suspect bad weather might have played a role.
