Man United legend Ryan Giggs follows in Sir Alex Ferguson’s footsteps with PFA win

Ryan Giggs has followed in the footsteps of
fellow Manchester United legends Sir Alex
Ferguson, Sir Matt Busby and Sir Bobby Charlton
by being awarded the PFA Merit Award on Sunday
evening.
The 42-year-old was given the prize for his
‘meritorious service to football’ after playing a
record 963 games for United during which he won
13 Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two
Champions League titles.
The Welshman has now completed a unique
trilogy at the PFA Awards having previously won
the Player of the Year Award in 2009 and the
Young Player of the Year Award in 1992 and
1993.
After receiving the gong Giggs said he was
delighted to have won three prestigious awards
during his illustrious career, which he has
followed with his role as assistant manager at Old
Trafford.
“I’m chuffed to have to have won all three
awards, the young player was a long time ago and
then the player award was a big surprise,” he
said, as reported by the Daily Mail.
“This is the culmination of around 25 years since
my debut, so it’s a credit to myself, my team-
mates, staff, family and friends.
“When you win each award you look down the
trophy and you see the players who have won it
before and you realise what a great accolade it is.
“This is the same. I’ve been here on the nights
when people have won it and it’s legends of the
game. I’m fortunate to win it and I’ll enjoy it.”
Giggs was on the touchline as Louis van Gaal’s
men progressed to the FA Cup final at the
weekend after beating Everton 2-1 in the semi-
final on Saturday.
The Red Devils will now face Crystal Palace in the
final next month, which will give United the
chance to win silverware for the first time since
they won the Premier League in the 2012/13
season.
