Multiple Blasts Kill 8, Injured 20 In Maiduguri Idp Camp (PHOTOS)

Multiple blasts at camps for people who have fled the Islamist militants Boko Haram killed four and injured 18 in the northeastern Nigeria city of Maiduguri, the state police commissioner said on Wednesday.

But officials of the National Emergency Management Agency said the attacks claimed eight lives and left at least 20 people injured.

The attacks were the latest in a series in the past week. In a video circulated on Friday, a man claiming to be Boko Haram’s leader claimed responsibility for bombings in Maiduguri and a raid in a nearby town last week. Bombings near the city killed four on Sunday.
Borno Police Commissioner Damian Chukwu said the latest blasts happened at around 04:30 a.m.

However, the Northeast information officer of the Agency, AbdulKadir Ibrahim, in a statement said the attacks were simultaneously executed at about 4 am.

He said, “Series of bomb blast have occurred in three locations around Muna Garage area of Maiduguri metropolis. The incidents occurred at about 4 am.

“The first location is Muna Kumbori an unofficial host community camp housing 199 internally displaced persons attacked by three suicide bombers which led to the death of two persons.

“The second location is Muna Dagalti which was attacked by a suicide bomber killing another person. The third location is Muna Bulaya attacked by a suicide bomber who was the only casualty.’’

Ibrahim said that five suicide bombers, all males, carried out the attacks

He said, “A total of five suicide bombers all male adults were involved in the incidents killing three persons. 20 people with various degrees of injuries were administered with first aid by Emergency response team and transported to the State Specialist Hospital while the remains of the dead have been deposited in the mortuary.”

Irreparable havoc has been wrought in Maiduguri after a twin bomb blast rocked the ancient city in yet another terrorist attack.

An early morning bomb attack in Maiduguri, Borno State, has killed at least six persons.

 

Witnesses revealed the incident occurred on Saturday morning.

 

According to Premium Times, twin blasts, which echoed across the city, occurred at two different spots, about 1km apart.

 

The first blast went off at about 7a.m. at a coffee drinking spot near the Bakassi IDP camp, along the popular Maiduguri-Biu road.

 

“Six persons were reportedly killed in the blast and have been evacuated to the hospital,” said Yunus Musa, a resident of the area.

 

Shortly after that, at about 7.35a.m., another blast went off in a tricycle near the NNPC fuel depot along Damboa Road, killing a woman and the rider. It was not clear who the bomber was between the woman and the tricycle driver.

 

An official of the Civilian-JTF, Alhaji DanBatta, who also confirmed the two incidents, told Premium Times that the first blast came from suicide bombers who were trying to invade Bakassi IDP camp, one of the largest displaced persons camp in Maiduguri.

 

“We have another sad day today, but we thank God the worst did not happen; because the suicide bombers actually wanted to enter Bakassi camp, and that could have been really bad,” said Mr. DanBatta.

 

“There was another one just opposite the NNPC Depot along Damboa Road. But I cannot give you the details of the casualties recorded immediately because we are presently conveying the victims to the hospital. I will get back to you when the doctors confirm their conditions,” he said.

 

The city has not witnessed bomb attacks for months, and the twin blasts have created panic amongst residents who had started to let go of their fears of terrorist attacks.

The Geneva-based Medicins Sans Frontieres recently reported that six malnourished children die daily in the IDP camp in Bama, Borno State. The authorities have been lambasted after report emerged that food items meant for the Internally displaced persons are being stolen by officials.
