Usain Bolt remains the fastest man alive

They say lightning never strikes twice, but Usain Bolt has claimed the title of fastest man in the world three times in a row beating American Justin Gatlin to win his third successive gold medal in the 100m final race on Sunday night, running the track in 9.81 seconds at the Rio 2016 Olympics. More photos after the cut...

After the race on Sunday, Usain Bolt said:

'Somebody said I can become immortal'. 'Two more medals to go and I can sign off. Immortal.' He added  'I came to these Olympics to win three golds and prove I am one of the greats,' he said,  'If I fail I will feel sad and I will not feel accomplished.'

Bolt, who hopes to break the world record in the 200m on Thursday - his favorite event - added that he would be disappointed if he did not complete the 'triple triple'.

Olympics: Gymnast sent home after drunken spree

RIO 2016

Dutch gymnast Yuri Van Gelder, dubbed the ‘Lord of the Rings’, returned home in disgrace Tuesday after being kicked off his country’s Olympics team for a night out drinking in Rio.

The 2005 world men’s rings champion had sealed a place in Rio in the men’s rings finals, after coming seventh in Saturday’s qualifiers.

But flouting strict rules imposed on the Dutch team he then went out to celebrate in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, failing to return until the early hours of Sunday.

“This has been a very difficult decision for us,” Dutch team ambassador Maurits Hendriks said.

“I think this is really terrible for Yuri, but such behaviour is unacceptable. It does not belong in the Olympics or any kind of sporting competition.”

The Dutch Olympics team said Van Gelder, 33, who had finally realised his dream to compete in his first Olympics, had admitted “consuming alcohol” outside the Olympic village and had been “withdrawn from the competition.”

Hendriks added the team leadership “had been left with no choice” but to bar Van Gelder from continuing in the Games.

It’s not the first time that Van Gelder has landed himself in hot water.

In 2009 he tested positive for cocaine use during the Dutch championships and was suspended for a year. He was treated for addiction in France.

The gymnast’s manager Orlando van den Bosch told the Dutch news agency ANP that Van Gelder had been “dealt a heavy blow” as he had high hopes of winning a medal.

His place in next Monday’s rings final will go to France’s Danny Pinheiro Rodrigues, the second replacement athlete added to the final. After France’s Samir Ait Said broke his leg in qualifications, Ukraine’s Igor Radivilov took his place.

“I Never Lost Faith, Always Kept Fighting And Never Ever Gave Up ! So Proud To Be Here #teamnl #rio2016,” Van Gelder had tweeted on his arrival in Rio.

The Dutch men have another medal hope in Rio despite failing to qualify for Monday’s team final, with Olympic champion Epke Zonderland, known as “the flying Dutchman”, defending his horizontal bar title.

Bart Deurloo qualified for Wednesday’s all-around final.

It was the second setback for the Dutch Olympics squad, after Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten landed in intensive care after a horrific crash on Sunday.

She was leading the 137km women’s road race when she slipped on a dangerous descent just 10km from the finish and tumbled head first over her handlebars suffering three cracked vertebrae.

Dutch team-mate Anna van der Breggen went on to win the race — the first and so far only gold for The Netherlands

Rio 2016: Iraq hold Brazil as Nigeria advance

It was a tale of mixed fortunes for host nation Brazil, who are still searching for their first win and goal, as Nigeria became the first team to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the men’s football event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, after they beat Sweden 1-0 in Group B on Sunday in Manaus.

AS Roma forward Sadiq Umar scored a first-half winner for the African champions, who won gold and silver at Atlanta ’96 and Beijing ’08 respectively, to help them scale through after winning their first two group games at the event.

Colombia, who drew 2-2 with Sweden and Japan respectively are second in Group B.

But Brazil, led by Barcelona forward Neymar, could not find a way past their stubborn Group A rivals Iraq, who held them to a 0-0 draw in Brasilia. It is Brazil’s second goalless draw of the tournament after they drew blank against South Africa on Thursday.

Brazil are desperate to claim the one football prize that has so far eluded them: Olympic gold. However, they were jeered by an impatient home crowd of more than 60,000 after failing to beat Iraq.

Brazil had 20 shots at goal, but only managed six on target as the Asian side held on in their second Group A fixture.

“We need to apologise to the fans, to the people,” Brazil coach Rogerio Micale was quoted as saying by BBC. “As the time passes and we can’t score, the anxiety increases, and in this situation it’s easier to make mistakes.”

Iraq coach Abdulghani Alghazali said, “It’s a historic day for Iraq to be able to draw against Brazil at its home. It’s a great achievement for Iraqi football.”

Denmark top the group with four points after Robert Skov’s 69th-minute winner gave them a 1-0 victory over South Africa.

Defending Olympic champions Mexico recorded a 5-1 win over bottom side Fiji, who conceded eight against South Korea in their opening game.

Erick Gutierrez scored four second-half goals as the Mexicans came from behind to beat the minnows in Salvador.

Fiji held a shock half-time lead thanks to Roy Krishna’s header. But Mexico, who drew 2-2 with Germany last time out, were impressive in the second half, particularly Gutierrez.

Mexico are second in Group C, level on four points with South Korea after they were pegged back by Serge Gnabry’s late equaliser. Germany are third in the table on two points.

In Group D, Portugal continued their 100 per cent start with a 2-1 win over Honduras in Rio. Alberth Elis gave Honduras a first-minute lead before goals by Tobias Figueiredo and Goncalo Paciencia earned Portugal the points.

They beat Argentina 2-0 in their opening game. Argentina knocked Algeria out of the Olympic football competition with a 2-1 win over the North African team.

Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa scored and set up Jonathan Calleri’s winner. Both teams finished the game with 10 men after Argentina captain Victor Cuesta and Ayoub Abdellaoui were sent off.
