US Firm Confirms Business Has Been Good in Nigeria Despite Economic Recession

A foreign company in Nigeria has projected a good run of businesses despite the exodus of other firms owing to the current economic recession.

 

An emerging high-tech mobile phone manufacturing giant, Akyumen Technologies Corporation, has given the Nigerian business environment a clean bill of health inspite of the current economic challenges facing the country, according to ThisDay.

The United States-based company which is at present exploring ways to establish base in the country, disagreed with the notion that foreign firms are scared of coming to invest in Nigeria due to the economic down-turn.

Rather, the 32-year old Chief Executive described those pulling out or those who are afraid to operate in the country as not being fair or probably may have been in the business of shortchanging Nigerians.
 

Speaking on the company’s plan to introduce various ranges of telecommunication products into the country’s market, the Chief Executive of the firm, Aasim Saied said some of the devices can be used to improve learning and to empower the young ones with useful skills.

“We want to create jobs in any country that we go and we also want to train personnel in the highest possible customer service expertise so that they can be at home with the technology we offer.”
 

He said the firm will introduce 50 per cent subsidy for students in selected primary and secondary schools in the country as part of its social responsibility to support education which they benefited from.

He said currently Akyumen Technologies is partnering 25 universities and colleges all over the world in the use of its innovative devices for academic exploits. Akyumen Technologies started up in the state of California, United States of America.

US Ranks As Third Most Depressed Nation Behind India & China

The US is the third most depressed nation due to citizens overworking and over-medicating, an expert has claimed. New World Health Organisation (WHO) rankings show it is beaten only by India and China as the nation containing the most depressed people.

Dr Lisa Palmer, a psychotherapist from the Renew Center in Florida, told RT that the US had a “mental health crisis”.

She said: “There is that pressure in America to achieve the ‘American dream’. People have a hard time with that – work life balance, peace, skillful thinking, skillful living, a sense of loneliness and isolation is very much prevalent.”

She claimed 15 million Americans suffer from depression – and 60 percent of these were taking anti-depressants.

Dr Palmer said: “If you think about it, we’re really overworked.

“Americans are working an average of 8-9 hours a day.

“It is something that we have to work on as Americans – that when we do have that time, how to best utilise that time for ourselves; to take care of ourselves; to take care of our health; and to prioritise and focus and work on our positive belief systems and things like that and not just turn to quick fixes and medications to help us sleep and to help us cope.

“Giving people education that are better and more effective ways of doing this in relieving emotional symptoms that are toxic for us and keeping us stuck.”

Wawrinka Beats Djokovic To Win US Open Title

Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka beat world number one Novak Djokovic with a scintillating display to win his first US Open and third Grand Slam title.

Wawrinka, seeded third, won 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-5 6-3 to add the US title to those he had already won in Australia and France over the last two years. The 31-year-old hit 46 winners in a brilliant display of shot-making.

Serbia's Djokovic made a strong start but struggled physically as the final entered a fourth hour in New York.

Wawrinka has now won all three Grand Slam finals he has played and his last 11 finals in a row, while on Sunday he became the oldest winner of the US Open since 35-year-old Ken Rosewall in 1970.

US Secretary Of State Expected In Nigeria, August 23rd

John Kerry, the U.S. Secretary of State, is expected in Nigeria on Aug. 23 to discuss U.S. cooperation with Nigeria over Boko Haram, economy and human rights issues.

A statement issued by the Information Office of the Embassy of the U.S. today in Abuja, said Kerry would hold meetings with President Muhammadu Buhari and Northern Governors.

“Kerry will meet with President Muhammadu Buhari to discuss counter terrorism efforts, the Nigerian economy, the fight against corruption and human rights issues. In Sokoto, he will deliver a speech on the importance of resilient communities and religious tolerance in countering violent extremism. In Abuja, the Secretary will meet with a group of adolescent girls working to change community perceptions that devalue the role of girls in society. He will also meet with northern governors and religious leaders,” the statement said.

According to the statement, the Secretary will travel to Sokoto and Abuja on Aug. 23 to 24.

Trump Calls US Media Disgusting & Corrupt, Says They Protect Hillary

Donald Trump has exploded over the 'disgusting and corrupt media' he says is holding him back after a New York Times article claimed his advisers had tried to rein in his 'incendiary' behavior. 

The article, published over the weekend, claims that Ivanka Trump, her husband and Trump's political team held an intervention on June 20 - and that he agreed to change his tune, but fell back into old habits.

Now the article was met with vitriol by the candidate, who described the newspaper as 'failing' and its remarks as 'false' Sunday, and blasted the wider media as 'corrupt'.

The article, titled 'Inside the Failing Mission to Tame Trump's Tongue,' cites four unnamed insiders as saying that Trump was forced into the intervention in June.

It says the group - which also included Chris Christie and Trump’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort - demanded that he start using a teleprompter and 'end his freestyle digressions and insults.'

And, the article claims, he agreed - but followed that up with popularity-killing attacks on the parents of a slain Muslim US soldier and the alleged incitement of the assassination of Hillary Clinton.

But on Sunday morning the Republican candidate took to Twitter to denounce the article - and wider media.

'The failing @nytimes talks about anonymous sources and meetings that never happened,' the candidate fumed. 'Their reporting is fiction. The media protects Hillary!'

He continued: 'The failing @nytimes, which never spoke to me, keeps saying that I am saying to advisers that I will change. False, I am who I am-never said.'

He then turned his glare to the wider media, accusing 'bias' of stripping him of a 20 per cent lead on Hillary Clinton.

'If the disgusting and corrupt media covered me honestly and didn't put false meaning into the words I say, I would be beating Hillary by 20%.'

'My rallies are not covered properly by the media. They never discuss the real message and never show crowd size or enthusiasm.'

Four hours later, Trump returned to the topic, ranting that the media is 'protecting' Clinton, whom he described as 'not a talented person or politician.'

'I am not only fighing Crooked Hillary, I am fighting the dishonest and corrupt media and her government protection process,' he fumed. 'People get it!'

He added: 'It is not "freedom of the press" when newspapers are allowed to say and write whatever they want even if it is completely false!'

US expresses concern over Niger Delta violence

The United States Mission to Nigeria has said it supports dialogue for the resolution of the violence in the Niger Delta.

It expressed concern over the rising violence and attacks in the Niger Delta, saying it was monitoring reports of attacks and other incidents in the region.

The embassy in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, said it shared the concerns of all Nigerians about the attacks, adding that it was in support of efforts, including dialogue, to address the grievances in the Niger Delta.

The mission called on all parties to resolve their disputes through peaceful means, emphasising that human rights of all Nigerians must be protected.

It said, “We encourage all parties to resolve their disputes through peaceful means and emphasise that human rights of all Nigerians must be protected.

“We continue to call on all Nigerians to persevere in efforts to achieve common goals: to end violence and curb the activities of criminal elements; to establish conditions and mechanisms for profound, positive, and lasting changes in the region; and to provide economic opportunity and needed services for residents of the Niger Delta.”
